AbstractDetection of contacts between interacting blocks is an important but time-consuming calculation in discontinuity based numerical methods. This paper presents a new algorithm for detection of contacts between any two polyhedrons with planar boundaries. In the new algorithm, concepts of touch edge and semi-spring are introduced. Touch edge is established by points from which the vertexes of block indent into neighboring faces, and semi-springs are initially fixed on both ends of touch edge but can slide during detection. The pair of blocks is identified as one mother block and one target block. Touch edge is located in mother block, and target face lies in target block. Based on the geometric relationship between touch edge and target face, the contact points and associated contact forces could be obtained directly. In this algorithm, there is no need to waste much time to judge the contact type or to calculate contact area between two blocks. This contact model is simple and efficient and has been implemented into a computer program. Numerical results from several test cases demonstrate the validity of the model and capabilities of the program.
