Abstract | Interface energy reflects the stability of the related systems including the interface. Interface properties show the size effects as the scale of the systems decreases, especially in nanoscale. In this report, a systematic thermodynamic model on the surface energy, the interface energy and their size effects are reviewed, based on which, an analytical expression about the size-dependent interface adhesive energy is developed. According to the interface cohesive zone model, the size-dependent interface adhesive strength of the nanostructured coats is predicted combining with the size-dependent interface separate displacement. The model predicts the enhanced interface binding strength of the nanostructured ceramic coat bonded on the metallic matrix compared to the conventional ceramic coat based on the reduced surface roughness and the interface separate displacement. The theoretical prediction is in agreement with the experimental observation. Copyright © (2013) by International Conference on Fracture. |
