Abstract | To clarify the critical role of chemical short-range order on the formation of shear bands in metallic glasses, atomistic simulations are performed on Pd82Si18 and Cu50Zr50 with different cooling history. It is found that shear bands are prone to form in samples with higher level of chemical short-range order. The magnitude of stress overshoot in shear stress-strain curve and the spatial fluctuation of short-range chemical composition are proposed to characterize shear banding susceptibility and chemical short-range order, respectively. A quantitative correlation is therefore established between shear banding and chemical short-range order. The microstructural origin of the correlation is discussed. (C) 2018 Acta Materialia Inc.
