AbstractPropellant tanks and propulsion systems are essential for space missions. Studying capillary phenomena of the liquid in tubes with varying cross-section under microgravity can provide the theoretical foundation for separating gas from liquid, saving propellant, and so on. In this study, a mathematical model for profiles of the liquid in tubes with varying cross-section under microgravity is obtained. With the given liquid contact angle and geometry of the tube, a model based on the shooting method is developed to predict profiles of the liquid. The length, interface area, and volume of the liquid ring can all be obtained according to the mathematical model. The theory is verified by numerical simulation in which, different geometries of the tube and different volumes and contact angles of the liquid are taken into account.
