Abstract The flow field underneath the train was numerically investigated by using RANS and DES. The influence of wheel rotations on the flow field was further explored. The pulse pressure which is possibly induced by the complicated vortices under the train, especially in the bogie regions, could damage the bottom structures of the train. The aerodynamic drag from components below the train were a large contributing factor to the total drag, and the aerodynamic loads on the bottom of the train affected the total loads of the train significantly. The wheel rotations had some influence on the flow in the bogie cavity, and had almost no effect on the steady aerodynamic loads; but significantly influenced unsteady loads. © Civil-Comp Press, 2014.
