Abstract | The influences of defect on the mechanical, chemical, magnetic and optical properties of the one dimensional (1D) and two dimensional (2D) materials are discussed in this paper. Utilizing these influences together with the strain engineering is a new way to design the 1D and 2D materials for better performance. With the aim of characterizing the defects in the 1D and 2D materials, the change in the properties is used to deduce the defects, which is an inverse problem. Due to the size effect of the nanomaterials, the long-range interactions can no longer be neglected. Therefore, the nonlocal theory must be applied for the nanomaterials in order to have an accurate modeling. Although nonlocal effect is considered in various works, the theory itself is with only one scale. As there are multiple scales from an atom to a microscopic/macroscopic structure, how to predict the micro/macro-scale mechanical properties from the atomistic defects is still a challenging problem. This paper presents a comprehensive review on using the effects of defects to engineer the materials and inverse problems of defects. |
